Caddydaw Cottage is reached along a 230 pace paved footpath from the lane through the small village of Portloe. It is quietly situated where the wild natural cliff landscape begins. Behind the cottage, an extensive terraced garden covers a large part of the headland and is a lovely secluded place to enjoy a picnic. In front of the cottage, a bit more civilised, a sunny gravelled terrace with (more) superbs views. Inside, the cottage has been carefully restored to keep the original atmosphere but add comfort. There are cliffpath and inland walks from the front door and the excellent, sandy, Carne Beach is a 5 minute drive. The King's Arms and the Lugger restaurant are a short walk towards the harbour where a few working fishing boats come and go.

Layout

A stable frontdoor opens into the sittingroom which has a large fireplace and a log burner, sofa and chairs. Shelves with books and games and TV (with Freeview) and DVD player. A well made (double glazed) sash window captures the small old fashioned harbour and irregularly arranged little village below. Stairs lead up to bedrooms and bathroom. Doorway to kitchen.

The kitchen has a fine old waxed pine dresser containing all the china, while a low key modern fitted kitchen has everything else. Until about 40 years ago you might have cooked on a Cornish Range set in the (now) sittingroom fireplace, but the present ceramic hob and electric oven are probably much easier to manage. There is a dining table and chairs for 4. Fridge freezer, microwave and all the usual things for cooking and dining. The windows look out to sea and over the harbour. A door leads to the utility area containing washing machine and tumble dryer. From the utility area a back door leads outside where a shed and coalbunker contain deckchairs and coal respectively.

Upstairs a small landing with a nice little window looking straight at the reassuring rock cliff wall behind the house.

The bathroom has a 4ft bath (shower over), sink and and wc another window onto the rocky cliff behind.

Bedroom two, has twin beds, small TV and cupboard. Window with a window seat and a view of the harbour worth watching.

The main bedroom with double bed, corner wardrobe and chests of drawers is a nice original cottage bedroom, pleasing to wake up in. The two windows frame glorious views that will probably wake you up - though you would not have to actually get up nessecarily, as the bed is just the right height to see the sea perfectly well.

It is double glazed and carpetted throughout, with vinyl in the kitchen. Electric night storage heaters and the log burner for heat.

Location and Local Beaches

Portloe: One of Cornwall's least commercialised and unspoilt villages, nestled in a narrow cleft in the cliffs. Small-scale fishing continues in the village, with brightly coloured boats and piles of lobster pots evident on the slip.

The village is a short drive from Carne & Pendower beaches, which at low tide join up to create a superb stretch of sand a mile long. If you prefer, you can reach the beaches by the coast path running past Caddydaw. In the other direction, to the east, the coast path brings you to the magnificent setting of Caerhays Castle.

The coastal landscape around Portloe is dominated by Nare Head, which provides beautiful coastal and inland views. Just offshore is Gull Rock home to many sea-birds in summer, including nesting Guillemots and Shags, and which was a film set for the 1950s film, Treasure Island.

The area around Portloe is rich in geological history - pillow lavas at Nare Head and ancient raised beaches at Pendower
